Global Nursing

For the last semester of my BSN (summer 2018), I was accepted to travel abroad to South Africa to serve in Pietermaritzburg (PMB) in South Africa. Azusa Pacific University (APU) partnered with the community in PMB to set up a program that allows nursing students to not only be experience the vibrant South African culture, but also be able to serve the impoverished communities close to PMB.

The surrounding areas of PMB are extremely depressed economically and socially. I traveled to the clinics in the rural areas surrounding PMB to serve the community members who are struggling with several conditions in addition to extreme poverty. I also had the opportunity to care for patients in the casualty department, which is comparable to the ED in the U.S. Lastly, I had the opportunity to care for the pediatric patients at LIV Village. We performed the annual wellness exams for the children.
